BMW Ultimate Driving Experience – July 29, 2014

BMW has been selling their car as The Ultimate Driving Machine for decades. Things have been getting a little diluted at BMW, but I’m happy to report that they are still making cars based on that motto. The only bad thing is that all of their cars are not built to the same standard. BMW Ultimate Driving Experience is a chance to get hands on with these cars, and I was lucky enough to get an invite.

100 Days of Coding

A few months ago, I decided that I was going write some new code every day and have at least one GitHub commit per day. There are three reasons I decided to do this. First, I wanted to get exposure to some new web application frameworks. Second, I wanted to practice getting an application from an idea to something people can use. Third, I thought my GitHub page looked wimpy and didn’t reflect how much time I spent programming.

The first project I took on was called Smarter Playlists. I was annoyed with the way iTunes computed the songs you listened to most often, so I decided to write an application that did a better job (by using average plays per day rather than total plays over time). For this project, I used the Java version of the Play framework.

The second project was a small movie comparison tool called Same Movies. This application was going to be my chance to work on a node.js application and a chance to get more practice with using an API. I decided to use the Express framework on the backend and JavaScript using jQuery to keep the application lightweight.

Highlights from Tuner Galleria 2014

Last weekend I went to the Tuner Galleria car show in Rosemont. This show has grown to be more important because it is the first import show to go on in the Chicago area. The show isn’t especially large, but the average quality of the cars is higher than most. There aren’t many shows where you’ll see a right-hand drive Supra and a Ferrari FF.

Pictures from the 2014 Chicago Auto Show

As always, I went to the Chicago Auto show this year. There weren’t many huge reveals at this show, but cars like the new BMW M3 and Subaru WRX STI definitely made the trip worthwhile. I’ve been considering getting a new car, so I actually paid more attention this year.

Redesigning the Site

If you visit this site periodically, you would have noticed that the design has changed quite a bit. I started this site 11 years ago as static HTML files and eventually moved to dynamically generated pages. The site was database-driven, used caching, and integrated with external systems, but is still used some old software patterns, and had a dated visual design. I had to redesign things from the ground up, but it resulted in a site that looks better, is easier to maintain, and does a better job of presenting content.

First Supercar Saturday of 2013

Supercar Saturdays have started again and May’s event was quite impressive. It was not as packed as some events in the past, but that was probably because of the risk of rain and that it was the first one of 2013. As you can see below, there was more than enough to keep me busy.

Tuner Galleria Wrap-up

I’ve been going to Tuner Galleria since 2010, when it started as a small section in the World of Wheels show in Chicago. With the huge increase in modified imports over the past two decades, it makes sense to add a car show that focuses on something besides Detroit Iron. I screwed up by forgetting to post the pictures from last year’s show. The pictures from last year and the 2013 show are now online.
