The First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple is a skyscraper church that was the tallest building in Chicago from 1924 to 1930. This Chicago church is home to the highest place of worship in the world (as measured from street-level). The Chapel in the Sky is a fascinating part of Chicago history.

When you enter the building, you are immediately met with intricate details from floor to ceiling. The main sanctuary is located on street-level. The sanctuary is pretty large, but it still features beautiful carving and paintings that are even in the highest peaks of the ceiling.

Getting to the Chapel in the Sky is much more of an adventure. The trip requires two different elevators and flight of stairs. It is worth it to get a glimpse of the beautifully detailed chapel that was donated by the Walgreen family. The chapel initially gives you the feeling of a small church in rural location, but the wood carvings and stained glass windows that surround you make it clear that this is a special place. The altar features a carving of Jesus weeping over the city of Chicago. Some of the windows also feature images relating to the Chicago and Illinois. Small things like that help emphasize the importance of this church to the history of Chicago.
